  • Do copywriters need a new name? | Copify | Content mills | ABC Copywriting blog – In this post, copywriter Martin Williams discusses the use of the word ‘copywriter’, and whether it is coming under pressure from content mills such as Copify. He argues, passionately, that authentic, carefully developed content is the only possible basis for an effective social media campaign, which in turn drives search too. So do we need a new word to describe what ‘real’ copywriters do, as opposed to content mills?<br />
    <br />
    This post presents my responses to Martin’s post (and will make more sense if you read his post first).
  • Principles Of Minimalist Web Design, With Examples – Smashing Magazine – Minimalism is achieved by reducing a design to only the most essential elements. Expressions of minimalism span multiple disciplines, as well as other art forms such as music and literature. For website designers, though, minimalism can be intimidating and difficult to master.<br />
    <br />
    But anyone can master minimalism. Essentially, minimalism is about breaking things down to the barest elements necessary for a design to function. It’s about taking things away until nothing else can be removed without interfering with the purpose of the design. Below are a number of principles of minimalist design, as well as an exploration of current trends and additional examples.

  • 50 High Quality Themes for Drupal Developers – Noupe – For a fair few numbers of years Drupal has had the reputation of being a difficult CMS to learn. Any web developer will tell you that. It is a fair reputation, but this does take a lot of the gloss and prestige away from what it deserves.<br />
    <br />
    Whereas once you manage to get beyond the initial tricky learning curve, everything falls into place and is relatively straight forward, and what you are left with is one powerful beast of an engine that can handle anything you throw at it. You either really love Drupal or you should learn to love Drupal. Yes, I am a Drupal fan.

  • Dear Ubuntu: I Have Some Concerns – "Dear Ubuntu, for the last couple years life has been good. Every time I've shown you to a friend or family member, they've compared you to what they're familiar with–Windows XP or Vista, mostly–and by comparison you've looked brilliant. Yeah, your ugly brown color scheme was a bit off-putting at first, but once people saw how secure, simple, and reliable you were, the response was almost universally positive. But recently, things have changed …"<br />

    I’m a bit late with this, considering that 10.04 is out already, but it will be interesting how people have found 10.04 to stack up against 9.10.<br />
    <br />
    From Tanner Helland who previously wrote 10 Days of Ubuntu 10.10 Feature Requests, this is a Dear John-style letter about how the author is finding it difficult to love Ubuntu in the face of the severe problems with 9.10, and just how good Windows 7 is.

    <br />
    div#page>div.logo+ul#navigation>li*5>a<br />
    <br />
    …can be expanded into:<br />

  • Third Tribe Marketing – Mention the words "Internet marketing" to some, and images of obnoxious "gurus" spring to mind, complete with big red headlines, yellow highlighting, and excessive hype. And yet real Internet marketers (not get-rich-quick scam artists) are some of the smartest, wealthiest, and most ethical entrepreneurs you'll ever meet.<br />
    <br />
    Mention the words "social media marketing" to some, and images of touchy-feely idealists who promote community over commerce and conversation over cash come to mind. And yet some of the smartest people in the space successfully participate in social media for higher traffic, better search engine optimization, and larger profits.<br />
    <br />
    The black and white division of online marketing into two tribes is not real.<br />
    <br />
    These people learn from all sides and apply what they learn in a way that works for them. This tribe profits from the intersection of pragmatism and progress.<br />
    <br />
    This is the Third Tribe.

  • Thoughts on Flash – I wanted to jot down some of our thoughts on Adobe’s Flash products so that customers and critics may better understand why we do not allow Flash on iPhones, iPods and iPads. Adobe has characterized our decision as being primarily business driven – they say we want to protect our App Store – but in reality it is based on technology issues. Adobe claims that we are a closed system, and that Flash is open, but in fact the opposite is true. Let me explain.
