  • Setting 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable headers with Apache .htaccess – When temporarily taking down a website to perform maintenance, it's a good idea to return a "503 Service Temporarily Unavailable" header so search engines know to come back later. This post shows how to set this header using an Apache .htaccess file, and also how to show a response page to users with PHP so they know to try again later.

  • Limes & Lycopene – About Limes & Lycopene | Kathryn Elliott – Limes & Lycopene is all about food, health and how to eat well.<br />
    <br />
    While there’s a glut of information about what you should be eating to be healthy, lose weight and have plenty of energy. It’s the practicalities of how you actually do this that most people struggle with. If you’re busy, work long hours and are not an experienced cook how do you buy, prepare and eat the best food for you?<br />
    <br />
    If your response to most healthy eating advice is “just tell me what to eat” then Limes & Lycopene is for you. On this site I aim to cut through all the guff and misinformation about healthy eating. Instead I focus on practical solutions and making your diet better than it is.
  • PHP Template Inheritance – Template Inheritance is an extremely useful technique for making reusable HTML layouts for a site. It is much more flexible than alternative techniques, such as “including” common elements of a page (like a header and footer file).<br />
    <br />
    The concept has been around for a while, most notably in the Django template engine. Unlike other libraries, PHP Template Inheritance lets you write everything in straight PHP. There is no need to learn another template language.

  • YOURLS: Your Own URL Shortener – YOURLS is a small set of PHP scripts that will allow you to run your own URL shortening service (a la TinyURL). You can make it private or public, you can pick custom keyword URLs, it comes with its own API. You will love it.<br />
    <br />
    There's a WordPress plugin available for YOURLS, making integration with your blog a snap: create short URLs and tweet them automagically as you publish blog posts.
  • My Love/Hate Affair With Typekit – Jeffrey Zeldman Presents The Daily Report – Speeding up design acceptance<br />
    <br />
    While browser improvements and web standards alone provided multiple partial solutions, Typekit offered a complete solution that just worked. And the people behind Typekit (including Bryan Mason and Jason Santa Maria) did everything right: they reached out to the type design, graphic design, and standards-based web design communities; they worked with vendor after vendor to offer as many fonts as possible; they spoke everywhere, marketing their venture one lecture and even one designer at a time.<br />
    <br />
    Typekit excited the web design community about type and proved that licensing and hosting web type was a viable business, providing options and convenience for designers and their clients, while bringing new revenue to type designers and protecting their intellectual property.
